How much does it cost to hire a temp?
Put simply the cost of hiring ad-hoc temporary staff will vary depending on several factors, here are a few that you should consider before you make your hire:
The Job Role: Specialised roles like IT, legal and healthcare will cost you more than entry-level positions.
Location: Cities with higher costs of living tend to have higher wages. For example, temporary staff in London may cost more than in smaller regional towns.
Agency Fees: If you use a staffing agency like One to One Personnel, they will charge a markup on top of the worker’s hourly wage which means if the temporary worker is paid £15 per hour, there will be an employment cost for holiday pay, National Insurance and statutory pension equalling 28% and then the agency will add on their mark up for managing the recruitment process, payroll and administrative costs.
A typical markup could be anywhere from £3 to £5 per hour making a total cost between £22 and £25 per hour.
Industry: Different industries have different wage expectations. For example, temporary administrative workers might cost £22 per hour, while temporary IT or engineering professionals might cost £50 upwards, depending on the role.
Duration of Contract: Regardless of the role duration cost should always remain the same and some recruiters will adjust costs to allow an employer to take a temporary worker directly onto their books.
